The Trailer

Usually, when I, El Director edits, I cut a trailer first, then get down to the cutting of the main portion of the film. However, with 'Jay and Kay Save the World' I got straight down to the business of editing as soon as the film was finished in March. After three months, the film was completed, and suddenly I realised that I had to cut a trailer for the short...so I duly oblige ;)

The 'to-do- list

In a way, I wish it all finished with editing, but the real 'fun' is beginning. I have seen this short film from the initial script and now to the final edited product. But the list of obligations is vast. Already, I have to put out another vlog fairly son, just to detail the actual shooting. Then comes form filling (ugh), re-exporting to a better codecs for DVD burning (double ugh) and I have to cut a trailer! (triple ugh)

I need to sleep...

The Bus Stop

Hello La Producer here!

Ok first off, I would like to say RIP Michael Jackson and thank you El Director for writing a beautiful blog about MJ earlier in the week.

Secondly, Caution, Wet Paint the movie is finally completed. The finished product is amazing and the team did a really good job. We have better quality equipment and the different is visible. I have to say that my sides are splitting from laughter everytime I watch it, and I cannot think of anything else that would chear me up on a wet and rainy day!

Anyway I thought I would re-cap and remind you of how the fun with Jay and Kay started...at The Bus Stop!

RIP Michael Jackson

There really is not much for me to say. To put it simply, what he accomplished in the fifty years on this Earth, is more than many of us can even begin to hope to equal. An absolute legend, the greatest musician of the 20th Century, a man who revolutionised the way we experienced music and what we listened to.

Rest In Peace MJ.

Now what?

That's it. It is official. Two days of rendering, burning DVD's, correcting last minute mistakes and then wholesale re-cutting of the pice has left me feeling kin od numb as I have actually finished editing Jay and Kay Save the World, which for anyone who has just joined us, is the very first outing of Caution Wet Paint in HD. It is my film festival offering for 2009-2010, and at ten minutes long, it is pretty impressive for a short film. I rather look at it as a featurette rather than just a mere short.

Anyhow, what now? Well, first send off the films to film festivals whose deadlines are fast approaching. That is the priorty. Thankfully, my preparation in terms of press packs and posters earlier this month really means that I can drop the letter in the mailbox and let it et to the festivals. A lot of the groundwork is already done.

Next send a bunch of DVD's to the cast and crew and open the swearbox in order to meet up with everyone again.

But it is a weird feeling. This film has been in the planning since late summer last year and part of the sequences were shot in October, some nine moths ago (although the main shooting took place in March). That means, for the best part of a year, Caution Wet Paint has been my life.

So what now? Do I go onto another project? Hell no. Here comes the hardest part. To continue with Caution Wet Pant, but this time follow it up with marketing alongside distribution to festivals. Now this is the tricky bit. How do I market? Well, like all aspects of film making, I am learning as I go along. Slowly, but surely, I will figure this one out. But definitely is to spruce up and update our website, which I have already begun to do...

El Director hates rendering

I may have a 3Ghz processor, 4GB of memory and 1TB on my main HD (plus another 1TB external drive). But that does not mean that this computer is not s**t. It is s**t. I hate computers.

In a (very) recent conversation with El Maestro, he asked what I am going to do once I have finished with Caution Wet Paint. One of the tempting answers was to smash my computer in...

Back to the screen of hell...

Taxes and Filming

One very unwelcome aside from filming is paperwork, especially taxes. Welcome to Britain, a country so caught up and suspicious of its own citizens, that the ordinary man is harassed beyond recompense. However, if you get to the top of the grease pole, then don't worry, you are decent and upright!

Okay, I am in a foul mood. Paperwork is one of the bug bears of filming...

Monday 22 June 2009

I like cereal in the morning, choco cereal with lashings of milk, and sometimes a banana. I tend to not drink a latte with the cereal, as it makes me too full and then I can't cycle or move...so tea is my preference. I don't like to eat my cereal alone, it makes me feel queezy, no I like to always share my daily intake of cereal with my best friend Jay. He is a comic-book artist and I am a postman.

And this is what we have been up to:

Social Networking and filming?

Apparently, this social networking malarkey is meant to make you a better film maker. Can't see why. Still, I of course blog, as you can see from this screen, as well youtube, and shockingly I do something called Dailybooth which is about the most sickly bandwagon I am currently on. Essentially, it mainly shows me drinking tea.

The problem is that I am pretty awful wuth all this internet stuff.

Anyway, will get back in practice next week!

Twittering for the Paint

I do not know how it happened, but somehow, about a year or so ago, Twitter and movie making became linked to the world of Caution Wet Paint. Now, twitter will probably go the way of facebook. In fact this week I already mentioned that I was getting bored of the web application. So be it, the next 'thing' will need to be found. While I may slack on my blog or video contributions, I do enjoy doing them. However, while the initial thrill of twitter was quite fun (especially with my short attention span), it is pretty limited in what it actually does. Still, why not tell people in 140 characters of less that I am going to the toilet...

Anyway, here are my favourite 'tweets' of the last month...

1) am i bored of twitter?

2) mousetrap!

3) thank goodness for tea!

(it must be noted that many of el director's tweets involve tea...)

4) heathrow overhead meakes sound editing difficult

5) could it be...check-mate!

Square Eyes

Witty service will be restored here in July. Wait for it...in the meanwhile, I am busily correcting a lot of colours. After the initial sweep, I am taking a second look. Not so much correcting the colours, but mellowing them out a bit. I may have over corrected some clips, which is why it is important that I take a second look at the project...

Tuesday 16 June 2009

Finished?

It has been one very, very long day, but I think it is safe to say, that I have finished correcting the colours for Jay and Kay Save the World.

Eight days, not bad. Still, I will go over the corrections once again tomorrow to make sure everything is to my liking. I need a little time out just to make sure everything is constant throughout the film, with no sudden changes or blips in the lighting levels. But for now, I am going to leave this computer for a bit. It has driven me nutty, sitting here all day long!

The Reasons...

Although this blog often has me moaning about the trials and tribulations of making a film, it is a lot better than being in the real world.

---

This is what happens in the real world. Get up, brush teeth, toilet, shower, breakfast, commute. Get to work. Eventually. Sit at a desk, all day, every day. Sealed up in a suit, tie and air conditioned building. 45 minutes to grab lunch, then back to office desk. Sit at desk, knowing quietly in own heart that any trained monkey could easily do the things that are being done now. Take orders from a manager who has half the brains of self. Flirt with the younger/newbie in the office; the breath of fresh air, still clinging onto hopes and dreams of a youth not tarnished by pension plans, a saving pot for a mortgage deposit and direct debits for gas, phone and electricity bills. 5pm, work is not done so carry folder back onto tube network. Crush and sweaty armpits all the way home, tosser bus driver who leaves passengers standing in the rain.

Back home, 'work' left on table, next to empty bottles of wine, that give the illusion of immortality, but in the end, they just confirm, in the cold vulnerability of a bed, just how lonely and pathetic life has turned out. And it begins tomorrow morning. Again.

---

Film making is not glamorous. It certainly is not easy. And it is very unpredictable. It is the clinging onto hope that is often one of the worst aspects of making films, but it is a hope that is worth clinging onto. Far more satisfying than clinging onto the hope of a mortgage repayment and a wine weekend in Wiltshire. For that is all there is to look forward to from the ordinary life. Life is a struggle full stop. So in my opinion, it has to be something worth struggling for.

People have asked me why I bother with writing and directing films. Especially the concept Caution Wet Paint which does go over the heads of many viewers. It is simple, I want to tell a story. That is always what I have wanted to do. I would be lying if the attractions attached to filming were not an incentive, they are. But they are not the driving reasons. Money and the dividends that come with it are easier reached through business, or even now, still, working in The City, despite the recession. But my primary passion, my ultimate goal, has been to tell a story, to share the emotional rollercoaster of a film with my audience. To create something new, and the most important of the lot, to give film lover more bang for their buck. For me, this is something that is worth struggling for. Worth worrying for. Worth living for.

---

As I correct the colours for Jay and Kay Save the World, I am slowly seeing the pieces come together of a project that has taken already nine months of my life, since the first inception of the idea based on the original outing of Goldtop and Silvertop. That is a long time for a ten minute short. But such is the importance that I have placed on telling this story, the love that I have for it, for me, it is worth the struggle. It is my reason for continuing with this project.

Plus, the prospect of leading an ordinary life, as you have already read in this post, fills me with dread.

La Producer

I just got involved with one of my mum's favourite programmes which looks at various stories and asks the viewers whether it is a true or false story. I saw one based on your guardian angel, something of a grey area, which some people believe in, including myself. So which brings me to Caution, Wet Paint, who is our guardian angel for our film, and will our guardian angel guide film festival judges toward our film...watch this space

Quick C-Correction update

Yesterday, the internet was down for most of the morning.

This actually meant that I had a very productive day ;)

I am currently hurtling through the colour correction - yey!

More updates, coming soon...

The Split Mindset of El D.

Got to be original, must be original with this blog. After all, this blog is a representation of all things comically great and spectacular from the streets of London. Delights that will shake the soul and tickle the rib cages. Comedy that will make you smile or at list curl up your toes in the most kinky delight.

---

Hey man, I'm a busy director, do you know that it has been ten days since I last got a decent night's sleep? You may have kebabs to fry and parties to attend, but I am busy director, after making my ears deaf with the sounds of 'Jay, it was beautiful', I now have to blind myself by making sure that Kay's yellow jacket is not to yellow. Come on, give us a break here!

---

But you are a writer as well, and a damn good one! You come up with original and witty musings almost everyday of your life. Surely, it cannot be that hard to talk about that a second time round on this wonderful output known as the CWP blog?

---

Hey man, that is exactly right! But in addition to all this writing and film making fun, I got jobs to do, and do you know how wrecked my body clock is right now with the around of different shifts I am putting up with? Plus I got to replace the kitchen tap this week as well as check the rest of the plumbing in the house and even seal a shed roof. A little bit of sunshine would be useful right now!

---

You can't blame the weather or circumstance for your own frustration. Sure, you may be surrounded by frustrations and circumstances, but you chose them.

---

True. Your point?

---

So enjoy it! After all, in a few years time, with a ball and chain, you may well look back on this time with a great deal of fondness...

---

You know what? You may have a point there...

---

Of course I do! I'm you!

---

Really?

---

Yes you idiot?

---

Oh! Hi there! So, I'm confused. Right now, am I meant to be the angry one, or is that you?

---

I don't know, I've kind of lost the trail a few threads back.

---

Oh. Well, did we pre-plan this blog?

---

Nope, about ten minutes ago this was not even in my mind.

---

You mean our mind.

---

Yes, my mind.

---

Not bad for original writing, eh? And to think, I was going to put up a vlog.

---

Save that for later on in the week, for when you have truly run out of ideas.

---

Ah!

The Poster Boys

It's bumpf, I know it is, but it is a little break from the stresses of colour correction. Plus it allows me to be ultra creative, but in a completely different way.

'Jay and Kay Save the World' - to be completed soon...

Sunday 7 June 2009

Colour Correction - Again!

I am back correcting the colour for the new adventure involving Jay and Kay.

Go on, take a look at the before picture from my colour correction suite:

A beautiful shot, that perfectly highlights Jay's legs. The opening shot, very artistic etc. But I want to enhance it, to make it 'more. So have a look at the after shot:

Here the pic is much brighter. You suddenly notice the skateboard in the background. The walls and the foot of the chair have more depth. The brightness of the white skirting board has been reduced slightly. And the trousers have been given a deeper shade of block, if you could get any deeper. The shot still concentrates on Jay's legs, but now, everything is enhanced a little bit. This happens on all films and will definitely be happening on mine.

So, that's the director's task for the next ten days or so!

Friday 5 June 2009

Sound Editing - Check!

Just now finished the first sound edit. Now to the colour correction and then the final edit before I spin it onto DVD then onto the film festivals! Only one week to do the correction to the sound. Partly as the quality of the sound was so good in the first place, there was very little work needed ;)

Oh, the amount of times I have had to endure this message.

With colour correction I expect the render time to take three times longer. Ugh!

Countries El Director loves

As can be seen on my own blog, I love traveling. Having come through India, it is clear that if it was not for the joys of filming, my home would be on the road, somewhere, somehow. It is also quite clear that I love India. There is no one country that I have hated while traveling, but what countries do I truly love, alongside India?

1) America. I love the USA! It is a country that you can have fun in. Yes, many people may disagree with its policies, but man I absolutely love this country! And it is a vast land, with so much to offer the visitor. If you have never done America, then do it!

2) France. I love France! I love the people (wonderful), I love the food (fantastic), I love the society (relaxed). You do not have to speak that much French to get a response, the people appreciate the effort rather than an 'argy-bargy' of English. Also it is another vast country - what other country in the EU can boast of one of the most active volcanoes in the midst of the tropics?

3) Singapore. Oh yes, after hard traveling around Asia, Singapore is the perfect stop over destination. Clean, safe, efficient, relatively cheap with tropical weather and fantastic food. I love Singapore!

4) Mexico. While Mexico does have vast amounts of problems, it is a fascinating land, filled with an ancient history. Temples on every corner, deserts and forests, a beautiful coeastline. Another great place for foodies, I love Mexico!

5) Seychelles. Yes, I am a Seychelllois, but that does not mean I am bias. I too can see the faults in this little island (mainly the incompetents who run the country), but it is still a paradise. Great food, great weather, great women - what more would I want from a country? I love the Seychelles and I am proud to be a citizen of these islands!

There are no countries that I truly hate in this world, nor are their countries that I would never rule out. However, there are parts of the world that I have to give a little warning about, due to my own experiences. Each of these places I would love to visit again, but not without a major change in the circumstance of the country or in my own self. They are:

1) Kazakhstan - A stunning country with some of the most beautiful women around. Also very friendly locals who are some of the most fun you can ever have. This is tempered by officials who will attempt to steal from you at every corner. This is not just bribery and corruption, but highway robbery. It makes Kazakhstan a shitty place.

2) Sri Lanka - I love my father's country, and I can easily say that it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. but wars make a land really shitty. And it has been one very brutal civil war. Like Seychelles, this has been ruined by politics, but in so much more, a nasty way.

3) UAE - Yep that's right, Dubai. I am not a big fan of the Gulf States, but the UAE takes the piss. If you are white, then enjoy it, but I am African/Asian. This is not a place for anyone with the slightest tan. While the African and Asian immigrants are a load of fun to hang out with, there is just a nasty feeling of ill will in the air. I have never been treated so badly due to the colour of my skin, and I have traveled in Salisbury. These guys had the money to build paradise, but they could not even build a cheap imitation of suburban USA. Awful.

Sound Editing - the continuation of pain

So I am currently bashing my head doing the sound editing for the CWP short, but what exactly does this editing involve?

Well, firstly, we have to get to how many of these effects are created. The bulk of my sounds have come from my computer. I have a piece of editing software that comes with a bundle of loops and other foleys which I can instantly plop into the edit and create my soundscape.

However, a lot of them is good old fashioned recording into a mic. And in this picture, taken from my sound editor you can see just that. The snap shot of the video in the picture shows NIck and myself busy recording sound straight into the camera via the boom mic. El Maestro looking on gravely while I try to do my best impersonation of Captain Goldtop.

But then comes the fun. Manipulating the voice of 'evil', the voice of the main bad guy, Captain Goldtop. How do you make him more wicked? After all, I am such a sweet sounding director, how could I possibly be the voice of evil ;)

And that is where the manipulation comes in. I distorted the clip, just a bit, to bring out the lower frequencies in my voice. Rendered it and then sent it back to the timeline to insert into the edit. Essentially, to sound bad, I just put on the bass and increased the funk – yeah baby!

Tuesday 2 June 2009

Very Frustrated

Let us put it simply. El Director is not happy with the Sound Suite. Very buggy piece of software...grrr...
